Stories about Animal cruelty

Do you kill your own goat?

Do you kill your own goat? No Why? It’s gross Hmm… so where do you think your masala ribs come from? An organ donor? How many people do you know that jump on the “qurbani is against animal rights” bandwagon every year around Bakra Eid? How many do you know who blindly accept that children being exposed to acts of slaughter has no deterimental effect on them? Reading the heated debate going on underneath the post “10 things I hate about bakra Eid” inspired me to go out there and shoot some reactions myself. While those against the practice of animal sacrifice presented “gross” and “cruel” as ...

Animal cruelty does not make for good entertainment

It’s quite the norm in Pakistan to come across monkey-trainers putting on a show or hearing about a rooster fight taking place in a certain village, or even going to the beach and witnessing people paying to watch a snake and a mongoose fight it out – all in the name of harmless fun. It is quite disturbing, however, to see the media take this form of entertainment – if you can call it that – to the next level. Channel surfing one morning, I chanced upon a TV show where a trainer tried to coax his goat to stand on ...

I know a puppy killer

Last year, I came across a girl whom I despised at first sight. Some girls have a legitimate phobia of animals but some make a big deal about being afraid, thinking it’s endearing to be the damsel-in-distress. I was afraid when I was five and didn’t know any better, but when I see grown women screaming at the sight of a tiny animal, I can’t help but think they look ridiculous. Initially, that’s all I thought this was, a stupid girl scared of a pint-sized puppy. When it ambled up to her, she kicked it, hard. The poor thing was knocked ...

Bakra Eid: Not just another ‘liberal’ rant

If cleanliness is supposed to be half of our faith, then I am sorry to say but we get a clear F grade, when it comes to Eidul Azha. The streets, lanes and alleys will have streams of animal blood flowing for days. The unwanted remains will create foul odours for weeks. All this while, we will be greeting one another with “Eid Mubarak,” and enjoying the backyard BBQ’s. For those of you who think this is another ‘liberal’ rant against Islam’s revered practice, I would like assure you that it isn’t. I am fairly conservative on certain issues, and in ...

The desi-elite political identity quiz

Osama bin Laden has expressed concern over climate change in his latest audiotape. Yes, the man who is being hunted down by pretty much the whole world has finally noticed that his nut job agenda and that of the ultra-left wing nut jobs in the west are nearly identical. I predict we will soon here Ayman al Zawahiri declare al Qaeda’s outright support of PETA, as (in my humble opinion) the two groups could form a strong alliance – last I checked, PETA hates just about everyone, and they really do love animals. Sarcasm aside, there is a lot to ...

Save the donkey, save the world

Perhaps it is the fault of Eeyore, the manic-depressive donkey who would have benefited from a course of Prozac in AA Milne’s “Winnie the Pooh“, but the humble donkey has become a much-maligned animal. With an undeserved reputation for being stubborn and bad-tempered it is really their early handling and treatment that determines their temperament. In reality the donkey is a highly intelligent, curious, extremely level headed and gentle. Donkeys have a reputation for stubbornness, but this is due to some handlers’ misinterpretation of their highly developed sense of self preservation. It is difficult to force or frighten a donkey ...
