Ghost in the Shell: When filmmakers choose style over substance

Almost everyone’s vision of the (very distant) future is bound to include robots and robotics playing an integral role in everyday human lives. The future envisioned in the film Ghost in the Shell is no different, but it takes the concept one step further, leading us to a setting where the line between human and machine is fast disappearing. The westernised adaptation of the Japanese science-fiction manga classic finds humans living in a world where, thanks to advancements in technology, people now have the option to enhance themselves with cybernetic parts. But Hanka Robotics, the globe’s leading developer of such augmentation, has ...

Collide is nothing but mindless action built around a threadbare plot

A number of subpar elements come together to form the film Collide. It is an action caper that covers the ground from frustrating inconsistency to mind-numbing stupidity within its 99 minutes of running time. The movie remained shelved for years (due to Relativity Media’s bankruptcy), a fate that was quite appropriate for such a shoddy project. A reformed car thief turned drug dealer Casey (Nicholas Hoult) and a bartender Juliette (Felicity Jones) fall for each other, as the former ...

Captain America: A civil war… an ordeal

Slam bam thank you mam. One 3D IMAX crash after another. Enough already. I felt pulverised and longed for Casablanca. How many superheroes can you throw together and not get a stew? Or bouillabaisse. A mess. Chaos. Drama. Noise. I wanted an exit. Captain America: Civil War begins fair enough with Scarlett Johannsen hauling a** with some of the big boys and she is very adept at this. A true giggle. I thought at last we are going to have an interesting action film. Then Robert Downey, Jr appears and his subtle delivery is the very best of the entire cast. It is ...

Hitman: Agent 47 – All fails when you miss your target

Hitman: Agent 47 is a movie based on the video game of the same name. The movie is directed by Aleksander Bach and is more of a reboot of the previous iteration released in 2007, Hitman. This time around, Rupert Friend (Homeland) dons the iconic black suit coupled with a crisp clean white shirt, a blood-red (befittingly appropriate) necktie and a signature barcode at the back of his neck. It is a story of a genetically engineered and cut-throat assassin cum killing machine eponymously known only by his codename – 47. Bollywood takes on Hollywood: ‘Brothers’ does justice to ‘Warriors’

When I heard about the movie ‘Brothers’, the Bollywood remake of ‘Warriors’, I was disappointed at first because I did not want them to taint the legacy of such an epic movie, one of the classics of the Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) genre. Don’t blame me for thinking so, because most of the remakes and many from across the border will agree with me. I started to gather some more information about the remake, as I am a die-hard fan of action and MMA championship movies. When I learnt that Akshay Kumar would be depicting one of the main protagonists of the movie, ...

Fantastic Four: When Fox Films tries to play Marvel and fails miserably

Fantastic Four starts with the same wonder and enchantment as films from my 80s’ childhood, like The Extra Terrestrial (ET) and The Goonies, but swiftly loses any further similarities to these classics and succumbs to an overly simplistic action-based plot that fails to take stock of what is important here – the characters (ironic seeing as this reboot is meant to be an origins story). As with many prequels, we think we are here to understand a little more about what drives these superheroes we have come to love while also exploring a journey that we should already feel a part of but instead we don’t get to fill in the ...

Mission accomplished: Rogue Nation cruises to the top, literally

Where the previous instalments of Mission: Impossible had action and all the elements of a good movie, Rogue Nation, on the other hand, has everything that compels you to keep your attention on the screen. With a collection of breath-taking stunts shot from different camera angles, you feel like riding the storm with Tom Cruise himself. Do you remember the famous leap Cruise takes between the two floors of Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol? That is nothing as compared to what Cruise does  in Rogue Nation. The year 2015 has seen the release of many action movies so far, but Rogue Nation is perhaps the most enthralling one of the year that ...

Thirty years after Beyond Thunderdome, George Miller has returned to the Australian outback in the grandest way possible. Mad Max: Fury Road continues the story of Max Rockatansky – the character Mel Gibson made so iconic back in the day – as he continues to navigate his way through the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The Gunman is a snooze fest with a great cast

A good action movie never fails to impress its audiences. This is why the action movie genre is the safest bet for producers and directors and guarantees box office revenues. Having said that, it is also true that some movies just don’t have what it takes, which is saying a lot, and the reasons are repetitive plots and identical scripts. In order to produce great action, changes in plots and somewhat believable action scenes are required. After all, movie-goers these days are getting smarter. The Gunman is one such recently released action film which stars Sean Penn along with a group of decent performers like Peter ...

Run All Night: Another run-of-the-mill Liam Neeson movie?

Liam Neeson’s name usually brings flashbacks of action thrillers and suspense-filled revenge sagas. His Taken series and his movie Unknown have categorised him into this distinctive genre, and rightfully so, since he is so good at it. When Ed Harris, another gem of the action-performing fraternity, is teamed up with Neeson for a new film production, it becomes hard not to watch their movie. Is Run All Night another run-of-the-mill Liam Neeson movie? What made the director, Jaume Collet-Serra, launch a third venture with Neeson? Will the movie manage to perform at the box office? Well, here’s what we know so far. Run All Night is based on a plot that involves Jimmy Conlon ...
