10 reasons why Karachi University is better than LUMS

August 14, 2011

A bit of university rivalry is always on display at any workplace, with those belonging to one institution drawn together in an alumni-brotherhood, whose sole purpose at times is to make fun of the inferiority of the the other institutions duly represented among their colleagues.

Suffice to say, the old our-frat-party-was-cooler-than-theirs-ever-could-be always makes for idle chit chat at the water dispenser or smoke room.

So, what happens when you try to pit one of the top business schools with the largest university in the country?

1.The real estate:

Karachi University has a main campus which sprawls over 1,800 acres, a small town in itself. This real estate means that KU has two full cricket fields, one Olympic sized football ground, a grass hockey field, squash and tennis courts.

Understandably, most students do not feel the need to go to the gym after you walk an average of 10 km while on campus.

2. Faculty:

Do you know why Karachi University gives you 10 fields to fill in your preferred sectors of studies at the time of admission? Because you have a choice from 54 departments spread over nine faculties of arts, science, medicine, engineering, economics and computers.

Compare this to the seven offered by LUMS over three faculties.

3. The food:

Karachi University has a signature cuisine that have become famous. The mini samosas served straight out of the fryer in the university’s own food street ‘Prem Gali’, to the halwa puri and other luncheon options at Majeeday.

4. Entertainment:

There are a number of museums on campus at different departments including Zoology, Geology, History, Sociology where rare artefacts and cultural items are on display. Not to mention Karachi University has its own botanical gardens as well.

5. We are literary – no really we are:

Karachi University houses one of the largest libraries in Pakistan. Its central, Mehmood Hussain library has close to 350, 000 books, including the personal collection of the Quaid, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. In addition, each department maintains its own small library ensuring a wealth of ready reading material for students and faculty members. And infinite excuse to sleep in peace. KU also holds one of the biggest book fairs in Pakistan during its annual book fair.

6. Our very own radio station:

Leave that iPod at home when you come to KU. When on campus, you can tune into the the on-campus radio FM 90.6 operated by students of the Mass Communication department. KU also has its very own printing press. We promote our own.

7. You don’t study politics and international relations, you experience it:

At Karachi University there is an emphasis on practical learning. From economics of managing expenses to learning politics first hand from the well represented student wings of political parties. And yes, you will also receive occasional lessons in martial arts and self-defense during riots.

With students coming from a host of countries, you would be thrust into international relations with allied countries in a friendly environment of samosas and tea.

8. Research is our middle name:

Karachi University has 21 research institutes which conduct research on things such as molecular genetics to the stars in our galaxy. For this purpose, Karachi University has an electron microscope and a ground telescope.

9. KU still has the best, and the most coveted business school in the country:

For all of LUMS pandering and solitary claim to fame that it is the best business school in Pakistan, it forgets how Karachi University was and still hosts the best business school in Pakistan, the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) currently headed by a former governor of State Bank, Dr Ishrat Hussain.

10. The last reason why Karachi University is infinitely better than LUMS:

KU is in Karachi. Nuff said!

So next time you stand at the water cooler and a LUMS grad walks up, you know who really has bragging rights.

Although I am neither a graduate of LUMS or KU, but KU just does not have the stature of LUMS. I would mention the old adage, ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’. This suits KU. The university may have myriad program choices, but none of them are as reputed and prestigious as the programs offered by LUMS. Infact, LUMS is one of the very few Pak universities to make it to world rankings. In short, you can’t compare apples to oranges.Recommend

You clearly need to visit LUMS at least once!
    1. LUMS has many (and better) sporting facilities. In fact LUMS provides far more sporting opportunities than KU ever can. For example sending students to participate in sporting events in Germany.
    2. Faculty of the seven departments at LUMS are better than any of the 54 in KU.
    3. Hotspot, Zakir Tikka, Tia Maria…. the list can get very long.
    4. You guys call Zoology museums entertainment? That’s just sad.
    5. Ever heard of E-books?
    6. LUMS too had a radio station.
    7. No thank you I would like to stay alive (get it?)
    8. Yes the word name seems very appropriate here; “naam ki hi research hai!”
    9. Iba is no match for SDSB at LUMS.
    10. The words “nuff said” sum up your whole article.Recommend

Here you go. Now we all will fight on educational institutions and bring shame to ourselves by discussing who is the best. Don’t forget the contribution of each institution to Pakistan where majority of people are illiterate. Institutions are seldom built and there are very few good ones. Instead of writing on some ways to increase knowledge and education among people, you are writing something that will initiate hundreds of comments filled with mockery and ridicule.

I read a lot of writers and I find a large number of writers from our country who don’t think before deciding on a particular topic.

Grow up buddy. both of the institutions are the best because they provide something not very common in PakistanRecommend

First of all thanks to Jibran for describing KU in detail and presenting it as the best place to study. I so really want to go back and continue my higher education.

At Adam: You must know on thing that when HEC was to close its business, only the state universities were the safest since we dont need affiliation from HEC as private institutions do. So we hardly consider HEC’s rankings. You know I am in USA acquiring my MBA. I am treated as a very diligent student because I was once a student of state university and I am really proud of MY KU. So Jibran ypu may add one more point of difference in value of state and private institution internationally.Recommend

You may belong to any religion or caste or creed – that has nothing to do with the business of the state… We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one state… I think we should keep that in front of us as our ideal and you will find that in due course Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the State.”

Most of what you mention is not even a criteria when determining what makes an institute one of the best universities in the country. Cafetaria and sports? Lets first talk about education and the quality of it.

I think Karachi University has Amazing potential, what with its vast faculties and research centers; with better administration, it can really turn the educational system and the “standards” of it around.

One thing you should know about LUMS is the National Outreach Program which enables students from all over Pakistan and I mean, all over, to apply (far off places you might not even have heard of, with students who cannot even speak proper urdu let alone english), get coached, sit for SATs, compete with thousands of applications (on the same curve) and study for free! Ofcourse the competition is extremely tough and only the smartest minds get through but the impact is huge. These students don’t just change their lives, they change their livelihoods and living standards, helping their families to grow with them.

LUMS teaches tolerance, acceptance and the need to always keep learning. And I think, we can improve our educational system by colloborating and working together rather than pointing out differences which serve absolutely no purpose except enrage a few to pass snarky comments in return. We do not need such redundancyRecommend

that was a good attempt to appreciate something i’ve been experiencing on my way back and forth for 2 years since i study at IBA. all i would say is building and infrastructural facilities do not ensure that you are getting an extra ordinary education too. it would have been more appropriate if you’d given some facts about your students breaking some sort of records, which you did not! and mst importantly, in your ninth point, you very confidently claimed IBA to be a part of KU, and being its host, which unfortunately is not true. IBA is a completely segregated university, which has nothing to do with KU, IBA students dont even know the routes out of KU, accept 2 gates through which they are allowed to enter and leave, so please do not include this point to increase KU’s credibility.
and besides everyone knows the difference between the standards of IBA and KU, so nuff said!Recommend

We are wasting our efforts in needlessly comparing the two universities. They both are good in the context of Pakistan. On international standards, however, they are much below the desired level of a country whose burgeoning population is….only God knows how much…around 180 millions.

IBA Karachi has declined with the passage of time as is obvious from a recent FT rating in which it has been replaced with its Indian counterpart.Furthermore, I am confident that under graft-ridden leadership of Dr.Ishrat Hussain it would go down further.Recommend

both institutions are doing a great job and both ought to be respect….enough with the need to undermine others just to feel good!Recommend

Here we go. while some people have the questionable “taste” to comment on the “beautiful girls” of LUMS, others are ranting about “what did you smoke while writing this”. how inexpressibly astute. i would like to say one thing only. any bias created against any educational institute of the country must be discouraged because each has its own value and worth. KU educates all classes, types and categories of people, thereby rendering an enormous service to the country. IBA and LUMS do their part in educating another section of the student body but that doesn’t make it any superior. this bias has been created in our minds specifically when organizations discriminate against graduates of a certain institute, which is wrong. A student of KU may be and indeed many are, as talented and job-deserving as a graduate of IBA or LUMS. we cannot judge on the basis of exceptions. else we wouldn’t have KU grads sitting in high posts in many organization across the country and abroad. and let me remind you. for students applying abroad, the degree of a state university still has more worth than that of any private university. try it. KU is the biggest state university of Pakistan, the only university whose degree is acceptable abroad. others don’t compare.

In a nutshell, how about trying to practice some peace and tolerance instead of raving about samosas and insecurities? there are better things to do in this world .thank you.Recommend

Dude, you have held a comparison between an institute where you have to pay 10 lakh something as a fee and a public sector university where they pay 3000 per semester. At LUMS, you can find those who can actually feed their dogs with food worth 3000 rupees in a day- the children of the chosen ones, whereas in KU, you can find maximum heterogeneity among the students in terms of culture, economic background as well as ethnic background. How dare you compare the sons and daughters of the elite, who are the best looking people in the world, to that of those poor “pajamachaaps” (that’s what they call KU girls)? How dare you compare those state-of-the-art classrooms to those broken desks at KU? How inexpedient of you to compare middle class people who travel in KU points just for rupees 3 to those who get their car’s fuel tanks filled with 300 Rupees per day?Recommend

I am from Karachi but haven’t gone to LUMS or KU. However, I agree that most probably LUMS is better in just about every way, your 7th point is a low blow. Karachi has far fewer bombings by religious extremists or for that matter sympathisers with religious extremists than Lahore does. Karachi lost 100 people in 5 days to shootings, 2 or 3 bomb blasts in a single day can do that in Lahore. Don’t dare make fun of safety in Karachi, this is one thing I hate, Karachi is far safer than Lahore, where at any time a suicide bomber can blow himself up, killing dozens. You imagine Karachi is in the same situation as in the 1990s, and Lahore is in the same situation as the 1990s, its not. Karachi today is safer than Lahore.Recommend

It is unfair to compare KU with LUMS, rather absurd. However, KU is no better than even the more comparable Punjab University. Let’s take a like by like comparison on the points mentioned 1. The Real Estate: Quaid-e-Azam Campus at Punjab University alone is larger than 1,800 acres and we haven’t yet included Old Campus and site campuses at Gujranwala and Khanaspur. 2. Faculties: KU = 10 fields, 54 departments VS PU = 13 fields, 63 departments 3. The Food: PU has its own Food Street, PDC, sugarcane juice stalls, milk shakes 4. Entertainment – museums of sorts that were mentioned for KU are also at PU if that is called any entertainment :/ 5. PU Library IS the largest campus library in Pakistan with 500,000 books and an area of 1,02,000 sq. feet, same goes for the book fair 6. FM 104.6 at PU 7. Students from various countries in Asia, Middle East and Africa study at PU too. 8. Research – PU has produced 3 noble prize laureates – now, beat that!! ;) 9. There is no point in comparing IBA Karachi or any other business school in Pakistan with LUMS – enough said 10. Because PU is in Lahore and Lahore Lahore Hai! Nuff said ;)Recommend

This blog needs correction, as KU does not represent IBA.

Karachi University Business School (KUBS) was established in the year 1999-2000 because Institute of Business Administration (IBA a constituent of University of Karachi) was declared autonomous degree awarding institution.

Pakistan has such a junglee awam seriously, whether they go to LUMS or even if they are sent to Cambridge, display of wealth, insecurity, jealousy and extreme shallowness is still there. Universities in Pakistan are merely manufacturing “technicians” and NO INTELLECTUALS AT ALL! The language and the kind of aggravated replies that people, even from the so-called “top-notch” schools are displaying over here are proving the very point that they have been given a degree, have been taught the proficiencies of a certain discipline but they have miserably failed to truly ‘educate’ their students. So whether it’s LUMS with scantily clothed hot chicks and macho burgers, or whether it is KU with the middle class samosa-eating bun kebabs, the bottom line is that, they haven’t been educated in the true sense of the word.

P.S. LOL at all those IBA people and people from other Universities who have been bragging about their own institutions for no reason. BTW, I went to NUS in Singapore, and over there I have never seen such rivalries among schools because they truly portray the sense of shallowness and deep-rooted economic stratification.Recommend

Duh of course, KU is waaay bigger than LUMS, but point is, what LUMS is able to achieve all on its own, being this small. Did the writer mention the truckloads of money government gives to it, unlike LUMS which arranges for its finances all on its own.

I really hope this was written in good humor, because if the writer was being serious about the comparison, I feel for his analytical skills. :)

    Peace :)

p.s. comparison aside, yeah KU does seem like an interesting place, which of course it is, given its size and history.Recommend

I’d rather hire KU graduates over LUMS alums any day. Why? Consistency, attitude, loyalty, trainability, suitability for promotion, and more.

LUMS grads have an attitude problem. They get out of school so pumped up with their own self-importance that they’re allergic to hard work, to change, to teaming up with people who are different than they are. It’s too much of a hothouse. Most graduates cannot wait to leave the country.

None of them are better or worse then either of them
LUMS is a Business Schoo, so a comparison should be between LUMS and IBA.

We shouldn’t be thinking like this otherwise there is no point in going to a University to get an education.

A University education, teaches ONE to start accepting that there are so many other educated people around :-)

I have studied at Oxford, never went to any KU, LUMS or anyother university, I did a private BCOM in Karachi, then did some computing courses, then got hooked to software development, did some software engineering courses and now I hold a software engineering D.Phil from Oxford University.

So, the moral of the story is that it is down to the PERSON as to what he chooses to be, not your University.

We all should just love that we have so many BIG and Good Universities in Pakistan.

    Happy Independance Day

I belong to none of these universities and one thing worth mentioning is that i find this piece with a ’nuff said’ ending very childish. yet i still admit that i find students from karachi university way better than lums. they merge in any environment very conveniently and have better skills when its comes to mutual work. compared to lums people who are usually living in their own seven-star clouds.Recommend

with the humor you have presented the whole article…the best bit about studying at KU is the first hand experience you get of everything…if you havent studied in KU you dont know what the world is really like…its a university that welcomes people from all walks of life just for the fact that they want to learn…
Its an everyday struggle starting from the walk from the Silver Jubilee gate to going from department to department…

Wow it is great to see which city is actually generating the:

    Greatest number of engineers
Highest number of Software / IT Firms.
    Largest number of Universities
Largest contribution to the GDP, as Wikipedia quotes ” It generates approximately 53.38% of the total collections of the Federal Board of Revenue” [Or you can just Google "Largest GDP city pakistan" since you are most probably a Newb to the internet]
I think I’m being more than Obvious here :)

All of the ‘offenders’ should actually get their facts right before commenting on the people and/or institutes WORKING for the city that generates everything for them, instead of blaming the Financial/Commercial/Educational Capital itself for the violence.Recommend

    @Sarah B.Haider:
Umm, actually LUMS offers education to even those who cannot afford. This may not be the forum to share it but I was on 85% financial aid at LUMS. If you cannot afford but you still fall into their criteria, they take you. And I also posted earlier about the [NOP][1] program. Education IS expensive, yes but LUMS and other universities in Pakistan (infact, all around the world) are now opening doors for students who are not financially capable of affording it. You need that kind of money to maintain a standard.

And its really disheartening to see people talk like this out of sheer contempt. Yes, some of the LUMS students come from elite families but some also come from middle to lower middle-class families.

Karachi University has such great resources like this article pointed out. It should put these to some use.Recommend
