Will ICC investigate the England vs India match?

Published: February 28, 2011

How did Indian batsmen not bat the whole 50 overs after Tendulkar's century?

I was unable to understand why England was unable to secure a victory against India in the recent Group B World Cup match until I heard the breaking news on TV. Shane Warne’s Twitter prediction, although it reached me late, resolved the whole matter.

Warne wrote on his Twitter account:

warne888 Shane Warne

Looking forward to the game between india and England today should be a cracker… My prediction a tie !

Soon after the match ended, Warne tweeted again:

warne888 Shane Warne

Before u think there was something untoward re prediction of a tie, thought it was going to be a cracker-tie was tongue in cheek-but right

Is it a coincidence that a cricketer – who has previously been involved in match-fixing controversies –  “predicted” an unusual match outcome which then actually materialised? Let’s not forget that he is still playing in the controversial IPL and has good relationships in the land of bookies.

Predictions in cricket are usually about victory or about a close contest, not about a draw. It is not like soccer or hockey where draws are routine. One day cricket matches rarely result in draws, but this is a different case altogether.

India’s batting collapse

After Sachin Tendulkar’s outstanding innings in this match, no one knows what happened to the strong Indian batting line. Why could it not survive for a complete 50 overs?

To me, the reason is that the Indian batting line-up is over-rated by their media and cannot survive when it needs to; they can only perform well in favourable conditions. The same happened yesterday.

Anomalous bowlers

The Indian bowlers hardly fought back. It was strange that they managed to topple the England’s batting line up thanks to Zaheer Khan. Now if it had been Wasim, Waqar, McGrath or Shane Warne, it would have been easier to digest. But Khan is someone who averages around 30 runs per wicket and has never enjoyed the status of being a fast bowler.

Munaf Patel averages 29 runs per wicket and was unable to prevent 14 runs from the tail enders but somehow managed stop two runs on the last ball.

More mysteries

There is a big question mark surrounding Yusuf Pathan’s fumbled save at mid-off and the English batsman not making any attempt of a second run on the last ball.

As someone who has played cricket professionally, I believe there is no cricketer in the world who does not seize the chance to win – even at the cost of his wicket – on the last ball of the match.

A batsman always runs blindly to meet the target, just to take a chance or to confuse the opponent in case there is an expected over-throw or any such miracle.

In my opinion, there is no chance that after the making 338th run, the batsmen are satisfied about leveling scores, especially when winning the game was not difficult. The English batsmen, however, went ahead to congratulate the Indians like nothing had happened.

Was it nerves?

There could be psychological reasons behind England’s inability to defeat India. They were playing in a stadium where the audience was largely pro-India, a crowd that is known to be hostile. Remember the Sri Lanka/India semi final in the 1996 World Cup and Test match between Pakistan and India in 1999 when players had to leave the ground because of rowdy Indian supporters?

But this cannot be the only reason behind England’s astonishing performance; the question is ‘who asked the English batsman not to score a winning run?’

Questions to be answered:

  • Will the ICC investigate this match for corruption?
  • Will the ICC punish cricketers if they are guilty?
  • In the land of bookies, can ICC assure the cricket playing nations that the tournament will remain clean?
  • Will the culprits be saved for the “greater good of the game”

Pakistan is the only cricket playing country in the world where all sorts of complaints are emanating against India from stadiums not being ready, tickets not being sold properly to the matches being fixed! It can’t be denied that the potential for match fixing exists in pretty much any cricket match. It is the nature of the beast. Cricket is a game that lends itself well to fixing, which is not to say that every match is fixed, just saying that it can be.
And teams can end up not lasting 50 overs, that’s not a big deal. Zaheer and Munaf have had some good performances, so they are capable of taking wickets, they may not be the best, but they are all right.
The English batsmen not turning back for the second, is strange, maybe they knew it was impossible, no reason not to try though. But again, no guarantee they stopped because it was fixed.

No a short reply to some other comments. Pakistan was not the source of news about venues not ready for CW games, ICC didn’t shift the opening game of the cricket world cup because Pakistan said the stadium was not ready. Pakistanis are not complaining about ticket sales, Indians are. Just wanted to clear that up.

Oh and one last thing, conspiracy theories … until there is proof, every theory is a conspiracy theory, but that doesn’t mean it’s not plausible.Recommend

What is my opinion on the match of India vs England?

I had watched India’s first World Cup match against Bangladesh. The way India batted first, was incredible scoring a 370 for 4. I personally thought India would be able to restrict Bangladesh to 200 or less. But, this was not the case and they managed to score 283 for 9. I was happy that India had won the match and also other people who supported India, were also happy as well. But still, I was not satisfied as too many runs were given away. On this, I had commented to ESPN Website about the effort of India in the match and the errors in the bowling, which had to improve immediately. This is because; the next match was going to be against England and India had to improve as this was their first competitive game on the tournament.
On Sunday, I had watched India vs England match. India had won the toss and they were batting first. When I had saw the first ball bowled to Virender Shewag, he was very lucky to survive that delivery and it was four runs. It did not the first time in the over but two more times it happened. Is this not hard to believe?. In one of the other over this had happended again and Virender Shewag had survived again. I thought WHAT A LUCKY PERSON. But soon when he got out, I was shocked to see the way he had got out. It seemed as if he had gifted away his wicket because on many occasions I have seen him playing the bowl going away to him. Overall through out, India had batted really well. In the last 10 overs, so many wicket had fallen, not only that, the powerplay was also wasted (it was said by one of the Indian fan). In the 49.4 over, the indian non striker had ran before the ball was bowled, why did he do that? did he not know the rules?. As a result, India were bowled all out was 338. Should the score have been more e.g 345 ? (if the last over was used properly)
England had come out to bat. The start was good. Andrew Strauss was the key player for England to score the runs. When he was caught behind this stumps, he manage to get away with it. Did no one listen to the noise? Was it the crowds noise? Why didn’t the batsman own up on it?. Again Andrew Stauss was let of when Harbhajan Singh had missed the catch. What, twice let of?. Then Munaf Patel all most dropped Kevin Pietersen but was caught. Ian Bell was given a life despite of the URDS been used in this. Can they not rely on UDRS? What is the point of using UDRS then? Again Ian Bell was given a lift after been dropped. Soon when the Power Play was on, Zaheer got both of the high scorer straight away. What a miracle?. In the Power Play?. Suddenly the wickets had tumbled and England were on the back foot. It seemed that India was going to win the match easily from their afterwards. 28 runs were to scored in the last two overs. The sixes came from nowhere and England were ahead. Surely, England were to win this match from their. But it was a TIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Why didn’t Graeme Swann run the second?
Didn’t India learn anthing from their previous perfomance against Bangladesh?
Is this going to continue all the way through the tournament?
I would suggest ICC and BCCI to take serious action if anyone is found guilty and banned them from cricket permanently. I seriously believe as an Indian suppoter that India should have won against England. Referring to their last performance India playing against England in India, India had beaten them 5-0. Where is that experience gone in the World Cup?. This cannot be a coincidence.Recommend

  • ALI RAZA TASADDAQ

Well personally, I always believed even when Strauss n Bell were smashing the Indian Bowlers that India will win…. But a draw…. there is something iffy about it…. Shane Keith Warne was the Captain of a team which was owned by Lalit Modi who had strong relation with bookies no need to go into detail abt it as a lot our indian friends know it already… So when a person like Shane Warne Tweets that this match will be a tie…. there has to be some thing behind the it….. yes y on earth the English batsmen didn’t tried to take the 2nd run even when Yusuf Pathan had fumbled…… That’s for the ICC to answer…. I am sure ICC is a bunny of BCCI….. they didn’t even discussed the incident of Suresh Raina when he was found with a bookie Female….. So don’t expect much this time around too…..
This is for all the Indian dum head its Your Country which is wildly famous for Bookies and ICC is just a puppet of BCCI caz of all the big sponsors, I am sure if ICC investigates 2007 Indian teams loss against Bangladesh they will find enough Evidence to Ban the entire INDIAN BUNCH OF OVER RATED PLAYERSRecommend

What is my opinion on the match of India vs England?

Sorry, their is more that I would like to discuss about. Looking back at the perfomance against Bangldesh, I would want to ask what did India do in order to improve their bowling attack in the second match on the World Cup tournament? Was their no one in the the 15 Players squad that can be picked for the bowling.

The approach that India had in the Warm up Match (India vs Australia):
India batted first scoring 214 All out. Australia were cruising past India with more that six an over been scored. Australia were 118 for 1. Then the spinners had come on to take the wickets and eventually, Austrailia were bowled all out for 176, which is that 9 wickets were taken and only 58 runs were given. As a result, India had won the match by 38 runs

The approach that India had in the Warm up Match (India vs New Zealand):
India had batted first again and they had scored 360 for 5, which is obviously a big score. But again the bowling had played the main role and, it was spinners and fast bowlers that had done the job. As a result New Zealand were bowled all out for 243 and India had won the match by 117 runs.
    What it implies to me?
This implies that India do have good bowling attack specially the spinners. Then why can’t they have more spinners in the team?

What makes me think that India vs England Match might be fixed?
I had just read about Shane Warne’s prediction that the match would be ties and the reault was a tie at the end. Is this not a coincidence?. Also, Shane Warne have contacts with the bookies, which make it more obvious and it is natural that the truth is not going to be exposed. In term of records, Shane Warne was previously banned for 12 month for taking the drugs. It is not only the case of Shane Warne, but what the ICC thinks and they are planning to take action on regards to it. Also before the World Cup had started, their were rumors that matches that were going to be fixed. After this type of result. it makes it more obvious in that case. Moreover, this had also come up in the Indian news aobut the match resulting a tie. Also, what we might see through out the tournament might be unbelievable. Are we going to lose faith in the game of Cricket because of match-fixing?

What I think at the end?
What are the Indian spectators going to think if they are not going to work on their mistakes? They are going to playing Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa and West Indies. I do expect that they are going to be working on their mistakes with the bowling and fielding. I think this would be really shameful if it going to be true. But I pray the god that this is just going to be a coincidence that the match was a draw.

(I do apologise if I have said anything that is wrong).

i have to say that i agree on it that it was a big fix… but i just wanna make a few corrections here…

1996 Semi Final was played in Dehli or Mumbai but not Banglore…. Pakistan Played the quaterfinal of 96 WC here and they faced a huge trouble by the crowed in fielding nd then the brief spell of Aamir Sohail’s batting…

1999 Pakistan vs India was not played on this ground.. keeping in mind the 96 issue, the Banglore ground was not scheduled for this series… that test match (3rd vs India & first of CocaCola Asian Test Championship) was played in Eden Gardens, Calcutta.

but still… India has a history of rude crowd and bad umpires… nd i agree to the fact that if somehow England would have managed to get that 1 run, they would be unable to go home from the packed Bangalore Stadium and, ofcourse, same applies for Indian team And yes, add the fire demostraions and shelling at homes for them as well…. :)

Great Anlaysis but i believe that this issue has been done & dusted… ICC is not going to take any action on it keeping in mind that BCCI has much bigger budget than ICC itself and the recent incident of Suraish Raina in SL tour is a clear example of BCCI’s hold over the ICC. as far as English team is concerned… well, Mark Waugh & Shane Warne got clean chits after proven guilty of match fixing in the past… so… cheers nd keep supporting Pakistan… :)Recommend

    @Smith:
In the West, there are state sponsored lotteries called 6/49..one had to pick six numbers out of 1 to 49. Ever week someone wins. According you will be how can winners be so accurate to predict which set of numbers will be results. Here Shane Warne had to predict only one of the four results 1) India Win 2) England Win 3) Match Abandoned and 4) Tie. Luckily his prediction was correct like a lotto winner who played the lottery and his combination out of twelve millions combinations happened to be his combination.Recommend

u r right that indian cricketers are paid better than pakistani players because everything is bolloywood in india…they get paid well by the underworld dons who can actually sponsor even a dead fly if they get some gain out of it..let alone tv ads & movies…and pardon me but indian players are better actors than players:)every world cup they are hailed as heroes only by their own media..if they had been more focused on cricket they would have done better after 1983…
even a kid knows that IPL is nothing but an alternative to make black money white…so an indian talking about “ethics”??? give me a break…
    @everyone
nobody in the world is as pure as an angel…we asians are emotional people..so lets not get into a moral debate but because none of us can claim that we have been 100% honest in lives…
tell me have u all been 100% honest all your life?
the only thing is that the essence of the game should not be spoiled & if any such thing happens it should be investigated…whether it was india playing or pakistan..we are here to watch a sport..not to judge the morality because who are we to so so???Recommend

First of all well done Ahmad for speaking the truth and raising your voice on such a sensitive issue.
Pakistani cricketers are not the only one to be blamed as bookies .I wonder what would be the reaction of the world if the any pakistani had claimed this match to be a tie
We protest this biasness by ICC just because of their poor investigation we have lost 3 precious gems if they can gamble why not any other can? belonging to India or any other part of world .its a reality that the most notorious bookies belong to India then why cant it be reviewed that this match was already booked why not?? We strongly demand that may ICC come across the real facts about these types of matches or have they become deaf and dumb
And for all those people who think that pakistanis are obsessed they got plenty of time to think this, we are a progressive nation and don’t bother on such foolish comments . Recommend

According to you Sahara, Reliance, Kingfisher, India Cements etc are all underworld dons!. The don of India is Dawood Ibrahim and it is well known how he is related to one of Pakistan cricket’s legends. The wicketkeeper of an ‘ethical’ team runs away to London to protect himself from bookies-lol. Owning a premier league team is a matter of prestige. Indians even own English Premier League teams.(Venky’s Chicken owns Blackburn Rovers) It is true that some black money has spilled into IPL and there is corruption because of BCCIs business model. It is still a registered as a trust and did not have to pay income tax until the IT department started insisting a couple of years back. Lalit Modi created a multi billion brand with his business acumen. The politicians who head the BCCI these days are just a bunch of jokers. A brand is a huge asset and we can see the real value when the Mumbai Indians or the Chennai Super Kings go public at the Bombay Stock Exchange in a few years.Recommend

quite interesting ahmed bhai.. i did not watch that match but i was listening the commentry and the same thing i was thinking. although i had not played professional cricket but i have sense to understand any game..as you wrote in your arti…cle..

“There is a big question mark surrounding Yusuf Pathan’s fumbled save at mid-off and the English batsman not making any attempt of a second run on the last ball.

As someone who has played cricket professionally, I believe there is no cricketer in the world who does not seize the chance to win – even at the cost of his wicket – on the last ball of the match.”

any one can understand this…why not ICC?Recommend

I beleive Warne is capable of leaking inside information of bookies to the general public and the fact it was a tie either deliberately or naturally. But the question is how can a person predict a cricket match as a tie. Something is fishyRecommend

What makes me doubt was the last ball of england innings.. Y he didnt try to go for a second run….. Both were very satisfied that our mission is accomplished. Even if they were run out tht will not make any difference to their batting averages as they both were bowlers :) but atleast they needed to try…. may be because of pressure the result cud be difference…+ there was no need to take Power play as the required run rate was going 6 Runs per over… so there are manythings tht made me doubt…. I wish ICC comes in action.. but its Indian Cricket COuncil.. not Internation Cricket CouncRecommend

Well I’m not a die hard cricket fan but it really struck me too (not the complete match only the last ball). Now we pakistanis have a tendency of transforming the simplest of events into some state of the art conspiracy. My cynical inner being proclaimed that the match was fixed which grew stronger after listening to match analysis and shane warne’s tweet but if we see logically what England did in the end was right. What if on the last ball any of the batsmen got runout then they had lost the match (by the way the shot was not even close to two runs). Anyhow the uderlying fact is ‘the match was thrilling to the last mins’ before someone’s tweet jinxed everything. Recommend

I am not much into cricket but this is so much of a common sense. England is not giving its 100% in tournament which is now clear after yesterday’s match. Match fixed or not fixed is something not a myth we or the Ahmad is trying to solve, He has raised some very valid questions which may never be answered by ICC or BCCI. If it was a crowd pressure (as commented by few) than why taking match to such close score and than not running for the second run. And many questions like this one remain unanswered and will may remain unanswered.Recommend

About indian team’s collapse in last overs, I think, these things happen at the dying overs when you are required to hit every ball. I’m not pro-Indians but we need to accept the fact that they have good solid batting line up. They’ve already scored more than 300 runs in most of the recent games they’ve played.
You see, Razzaq is unable to score for quite some time as he comes for batting in the second or third last over… Had he come earlier, he can get more time to adjust and score. Same thing happened with Umar Akmal in the last match comparing to the first match.

I disagree with you on Zaheer’s point too. He can turn the tables around like he did in that match. Not to forget, It was Power Play, which 9 out of 10 times turn this way under such situations.

Most important thing, if we notice, crowd did turn extremely rowdy at the start of the power play, which might have resulted in the panic. I was surprised to see the crowd’s response… But again, the last ball mystery remains there. Batsmen should’ve tried running for second run regardless of the result.Recommend

Well some points raised by Ahmed Fuad do make sense but it’s practically not possible to have a match pre-arranged as a tie. There are indications that spot fixing or even match fixing is taking place in the tournament but it’s hard to believe that this particular game between India and England was fixed.

One factor that contributed heavily in England’s favour was the decision of New Zealand umpire Billy Bowden who ruled Ian Bell not out when the ball was hitting the base of middle stump. Even the TV umpire, an Australian, didn’t bother to disagree with his big brother Billy.Recommend
