Chashme Baddoor: Another sad attempt at a remake

Published: April 10, 2013

Chashme Baddoor is a loud, vibrant, mindless laughathon – but it is humour that is aimed for the masses. PHOTO: PUBLICITY

It seems Bollywood is on a remake spree. A weekend after the release of the Himmatwala remake we are offered Chashme Baddoor, a remake of a 1981 comedy of the same name.

While with remakes, one inevitably ends up comparing it to the original, I am going to try and be fair to the 2013 movie, and not pitch the two versions against each other.

Chashme Baddoor  is an out-and-out David Dhawan comedy – full of cheesy shayari (poetry), slapstick (and sometimes over the top comedy) and exaggerated situations. This is not a movie for those expecting any form of sense in the on-goings, while the mindless entertainment seekers will find this movie to be right on the money for sure!

The story is a shallow, no-brainer – three friends fall for the same girl and when the girl falls for one of them, the other two try to first separate them and then bring them back together.

To add to the onscreen masala, we also have Rishi Kapoor and Lillete Dubey falling for each other at first sight, Anupam Kher and Anupam Kher (double role) fighting each other and their whacky mother!

In the music department, Chashme Baddoor  is weak and chaotic at best.

“Har ek friend kamina hota hai” is its strongest track, but in the movie it does not come till the end titles. “Early Morning” and “Dhichkyaaon doom doom” are at best hummable – and all the other tracks are just super forgettable!

As per box office reports, the movie has collected over 19 crore on the first weekend in India and as per Hammad Chaudhry, the film’s distributor in Pakistan (HKC Entertainment) on Twitter;

“Chashme Baddoor  opened ‘zabardast’ in Pakistan with 47, ooo (on) day one including limited preview screenings Thursday late night.”

Let’s weigh the good against the bad in Chashme Baddoor  and see how it fares.

  • For us in Pakistan, the good has to be Ali Zafar. He looks good and does a pretty decent job as the leading man. However, on occasions (where he is looking for his inner Dev Anand) Ali sounds awkward – but who cares as long as he keeps the flag flying high!
  • Siddharth and Divyendu Sharma, as Ali’s jealous friends, have a fantastic screen presence and good timing for comedy – and in reality carry most of the movie on their shoulders. This could have been because they were given the meatiest scenes and dialogues but their acting was what actually pulled us through.
  • The film has some entertaining moments, its share of witty one-liners and some good jokes. I did find myself laughing many times while watching the film.
  • The promotions of the film were spot on – funny, colourful and enticing – exactly what is needed to hook the Gennex audience to buy the tickets.

Moving on, Chashme Baddoor is from nowhere flawless. Here is why:

  • For starters, the leading lady, Tapsee Pannu, who three boys have supposedly fallen for has zero on-screen presence, looks or charisma. In fact she is completely forgettable other than her constant “Dum hai boss …”

  • The lead pair has zero chemistry. Ali Zafar and Tapsee Pannu’s love story can at best be called lukewarm and sadly not too happening.
  • The flow of the movie is patchy and personally I account this to weak editing more than anything else.
  • I found the humour to be slapstick in nature and many of the jokes were extremely sexist too. Bollywood continues to objectify women, as usual.
  • In terms of music – which is the backbone of any Bollywood flick - Chashme Baddoor  is not the most memorable ride either.
  • For the fans of the original Chashme Baddoor  – this will be a major disappointment, because this is nothing like the sweet and tender story where Farooq Sheikh romanced Deepti Naval.

Final Verdict: Chashme Baddoor  is a loud, vibrant, mindless laughathon – but it is humour that is aimed for the masses. The movie is at best average – but then that’s your typical David Dhawan flick – flawed yet entertaining.

The movie gets a sad 4 on 10 rating from me, leave a comment and let me know what you thought of the film.

@ Author, I do agree to your views to an extent. This movie, surely has only the adaptation from the original one. Treatment, funny elements and lifestyle have been kept way too different. Lifestyle of Today’s Goa and yesteryear’s Delhi have least similarity. So technically, this can’t be in a way compared to the original one.

I also reviewed that it is in no way as close to the simplicity, romance and wittiness which was shown in the original version.

It’s strange that you missed Rishi’s screen presence and amazing timing (like always). Bharathi Achrekar as Daadi is flawless. Anupamkher (The Teacher) is worth applauding.

Not mentioning Juhie Chawla is a hard to digest thing.

Undoubtedly, Sid and Divyendu are the real crowd pullers of this fare. As, Ali Zafar is too composed.Recommend

How could the author say this? This may be her first hindi film, but she has done lots of movies before in south which were superhits. If she did not have the on-screen presence, looks or charisma why would a successful director like David cast her?

salmaan chooses very few gud movies bodyguard flop ek tha tiger flop dabangg2 flop shah rukh’s comedy is cheapless mindless and characterless ajay devgan had just emerged after all the best

ali zafar does only hav looks but voice and acting too

songs of this movie is excellent i luv it ali zafar has proven himself enough to consider him as one of the great talent may b a raw and needed to b polish

some of u were right he is not fit for bollywood bcauz they dont know about acting there lot gud actors like jonny lever ritesh irfaan khan govinda abey deol and raj pal yadav who are not given enough chances to proove themself

i agree chemistry is not matchable ali’s chemistry was better with aditi rao

Adaptation?? What’s an adaptation? You do an adaptation of a novel! When you are re-doing a movie it is quintessentially a remake of an earlier version. Most remakes of iconic movies cannot hold a candle to the original whether it is in Bollywood or Hollywood. It is the same situation here; this is really a poor job in which the producers have just copied the story and are hoping to cash in on the comedy-thirsty crowds in the sub-continent. And, they may do well on that front.

Samra states: “While with remakes, one inevitably ends up comparing it to the original, I am going to try and be fair to the 2013 movie, and not pitch the two versions against each other.” I do not see the point of a review of a remake and not compare the two versions.

The original was exquisite in terms of acting, songs, humor, wit, and originality. Deepti Nawal, Farooq Shaikh, and Saeed Jaffrey, and all the other actors whose names I do not now remember were just marvelous, hilarious, and truly entertaining. Recommend

Yaar,It happened in the past when bollywood was merely surviving. Actresses were look down upon and hardly any girl from good family was interested to join film industry.I m not very old but I could remember an interview of Madhuri Dixit.Anchor asked a guy would you like to marry a film actress. He said “who will marry them, they r used one,na baba na”.Then madhuri replied “pahle inse puchhe ki film actresses inse sadi bhi karna chahti hai” and interview went on.It looks quite embarrassing in present scenario and we know how arrogant our film actresses r by now. Aishwarya is damn beautiful and extremely talented .Yet she struggled in initial phases.Miss world crown is direct ticket to bollywood, but expanses for maintaining skin and hair, cost of each photo shoot is beyond the reach of a middle class family.About shahrukh, you need to read his biography. His sacrifice from NSD to movie Deewana tells the whole story about this world.Akshaya was lucky.Vidya balan rose from small screen. Please dont generalize one or two cases.Breakthrough in bollywood is not easy task. Now see, what people r doing.First they act in south indian movies. From there ,they come to join Bollywood. Many talents r dying coz there is no taker for them.Bollywood is now corporate world and ultimate dream for many. But the worst thing happened to bollywood is that it is following dynasty system. They r not searching for real talent.

Deepti Naval, Farroukh Sheikh… dear-o-dear-o-dear! Brings tears to ones eyes on remembering their tender-loving romances on screen — not just in Chashme-Baddoor the Original, but in several other flicks they have been paired together. Truly, nothing ever can come close to the Golden Oldies. The thing one must remember is that not only are the present cast (Tapsee Pannu, Ali Zafar etc) a zero when compared to REAL actors of the past (the likes of Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha are another famous such pairing), but the kind of Directors like David Dhawan can never be able to hold even a candle to the likes of Sai Paranjpe (Writer and Director of the Original C-B flick) and others such as Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzaar etc who produced such real things in the past… In the past it was the Movie that made the Money, but these days it is the Money that makes a Movie! Clearly one sees where the emphasis/priority lies… and so flows the resultant quality (or the lack there-of) — very, very sad indeed!Recommend
