Pressing questions: Should Misbah call it a day?
Misbah has done a lot for the team, but he is just not suited for the ODI format. PHOTO: REUTERS
A series victory typically covers a team’s weaknesses as the focus then revolves around how the series was won, which players performed exceptionally, and then generally how good the leadership and management was.
However, such is not the case in Pakistan’s 2-1 series victory over India.
It is a great feat no doubt! Beating India in India and almost clean sweeping them is an achievement and a half; however the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should not shy away from assessing the overall team performance during the series and fixing the ODI team.
Pakistan’s Test and T20 teams are quite brilliant in my view. The Test team has a stable batting line up where all the batsmen have scored heavily over the past two seasons and the bowling remains a threat with the world’s best spinners.
The T20 team has a settled feel under the leadership of Hafeez. It has explosive batsmen as well as accumulators, and the bowling is potent with the likes of Ajmal, Gul, and Afridi – the leading T20 bowlers in the world.
The ODI team however, requires some tweaks.
The series win over India was largely due to the brilliance of Junaid Khan, the efficiency of the overall bowling attack, the markedly improved fielding, and Nasir Jamshed’s superb form with the bat. Besides him, only Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan displayed some semblance of form with the bat; no other batsmen looked in touch.
The ODI team’s middle order, Misbah’s position in the team, the vacant all-rounder slot(s), and the wicket keeper are key issues that need to be addressed by the PCB.
1. The middle order requires more fire power! Misbah has got to go!
A middle order comprising of Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbahul Haq, and Shoaib Malik looks quite ugly on paper. On the field, it looks even uglier.
That is not the middle order of an ODI outfit. For a Test team, it looks great; but not for ODIs. You absolutely cannot have Azhar, Younis, and Misbah playing for the same XI. If the three of them bat 50 overs, they would collectively put on 100 runs.
Failing to capitalise on an opening stand of 140 odd in 23 overs and folding in a chase of 167 clearly demonstrates the inability of Pakistan’s current middle order to push for runs in ODIs.
One cannot expect an Azhar or a Younis or a Misbah to maintain the sort of momentum that was required to build on the platform provided by Hafeez and Jamshed in the second ODI. Nor can one expect constant rotation of the strike or a push for singles to apply pressure on the fielders when any of the two are at the crease together.
One of the biggest reasons for Pakistan’s failure to chase 167 in the third ODI was Misbah’s ‘swashbuckling’ innings of 39 off 82 deliveries. His approach was simply to block, block, block, and eventually he sucked the blood out of Pakistan’s chase -which should have been a cakewalk.
Misbah has failed time and again. His supporters argue that besides him, no one in the team has the ability to stay at the crease, and that without Misbah, Pakistan would not be able to play 50 overs.
Utter hogwash!
Misbah occupies the crease, and blocks 75% of the deliveries he faces. He scores at a strike rate of 40, and loses his wicket after being around for over an hour when he should have initially seen the ball as clearly as a football!
For Pakistan’s sake, for our sake, and for his own sake, please someone sack him from the ODI team!
Misbah has done immensely well as a leader of the team and his contribution as a captain will always be remembered, but more so in test matches than ODIs.
His supporters say that Misbah was responsible for taking Pakistan out of the rut following the spot fixing scandal. But, they forget that Misbah only took over the Test team. The ODI team was still under Shahid Afridi, who played as a big a role if not bigger, than Misbah did in the aftermath of the spot fixing saga.
It was Afridi who led Pakistan to the semi final of the World T20 and the World Cup. It was Afridi under whom we managed to end 2011 as the leading ODI team of the year in terms of W/L ratio.
If it wasn’t for a spat with the coach and the then PCB chairman, Misbah would probably never have replaced Afridi as captain of the ODI team.
So to say that Misbah has done a lot for Pakistan and he should not be dropped is wrong. Yes, he has done a lot for the Test team and undoubtedly he should continue to lead the Test team, but there is absolutely no place for him in the ODI team especially when you have someone like Azhar Ali to do exactly the same job – but better!
If Afridi can be sacked while leading the team to the World Cup semi-final and a series win over the West Indies, so can Misbah (despite the series win over India,) where he hardly played any role at all.
In Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik, and the untested Haris Sohail, Pakistan has a capable pool of middle order batsmen who can become the core batting line up in ODIs for Pakistan.
It is highly unlikely that Younis Khan (nor Misbah) will be around in two year’s time for the World Cup in 2015. It is time that the PCB asked Misbah and Younis to move on from ODIs and the team management started working on the above mentioned (five) batsmen by giving them ample of experience over the next of couple years leading to the World Cup.
Mohammad Hafeez has shown that he is ready to take over the captaincy of the ODI team. With him and Nasir Jamshed, Pakistan finally have a well settled opening combination!
It is time that more attention is paid to the middle order.
2. All-rounder slot(s) empty
With Shahid Afridi’s and Abdul Razzaq’s ODI careers coming to an end, the selectors need to search for a capable replacement or two.
No, Shoaib Malik is not the answer.
A large factor driving the success of Pakistan’s ODI team in the 90s was the presence of brilliant all-rounders in the mould of Wasim Akram, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood, and Shahid Afridi.
They were all attacking cricketers – primary bowlers and hard hitting late order batsmen.
Pakistan is sorely missing similar cricketers in its ODI line up.
Asad Ali and Anwar Ali, both of whom were part of the squad that travelled to India, have similar reputations in domestic cricket; however they remain untested in the international arena. Neither got the chance to display their talent though.
Hammad Azam is another player who has a glowing domestic reputation for being a finisher. His batting is explosive and his steady medium pace can be more than handy in the middle overs of an ODI.
Hammad did no wrong, yet he was dropped from the team without getting enough chances to display his potential.
The PCB and the team management need to blood these youngsters soon and provide them with more exposure to international cricket. At the same time, they need to continue looking for all-rounders who can potentially replace Afridi and Razzaq in the long term.
3. Where are the good keeper batsmen?
The wicket keeper’s position has troubled Pakistan for a long time now.
Kamran Akmal was quite efficient behind the stumps in the series against India. But the reason he is the first choice keeper is because he is a very good batsman.
Yet, he has been a miserable failure in T20s and ODIs since his return to the team.
He failed continuously during the World T20, and he hardly scored a run in the T20s and ODIs against India.
The PCB selectors really need to work hard to find a good keeper batsman for Pakistan.
I hope that the series win over India does not mask these issues with the team and that the PCB takes some notice and fix them in time. The success of Pakistan’s Test and T20 teams has been based on specialist players who have fulfilled their roles really well.
It is high time that the same kind of attention is paid to the ODI team and specialists are included in the squad.

Misbah should stay till Champions Trophy and assess his one day future there. He deserves to lead Pakistan in at least one ICC event. Every team in the world has the same test and ODI captain apart from South Africa (in that case Smith plays in the ODI side as a player.) He is the only Pakistan ODI captain since the Woolmer era to beat major sides in bilateral series and also the first in 12 years to win a major piece of 50 over silverware – the Asia Cup. As an ODI captain he has outperformed the likes of Malik, Younis, Yousuf and Afridi. Wasn’t he Pakistan’s leading ODI run scorer in 2012 and declared cricinfo batsmen of the year 2011 for both tests and ODIs combined? It was only when he was back in the ODI side as a player and formally vice-captain that Pakistan got back on track in the one day format. Afridi was the man who ran away from test captaincy, attacked his players in the media, struggled to perform apart from against minnows in the World Cup, lost more than he won in all formats and gave irresponsible media statements so to credit him for Pakistan’s resurgence is madness. As a captain in this ODI format Misbah has:
Beat Sri Lanka 4-1
Won the Asia Cup
Beat India in India
Clinical 3-0 vs. BD (who have beaten NZ and WI at home in last 3 years and beaten SL and India and England in Cups)
Won 21 and lost just the 12

Who should replace Misbah?
Umar Akmal who has time and again showed his talent to give away his wicket?
Pakistan does not serve Misbah who has leaded a failed team to path of success.
Just because he does not swear on people, does not fix matches, does not get caught tampering the pitch and ball….u hate him.Recommend
Spot on!!!Recommend
@Alchemisto: I used to back him a lot amid people pointing fingers at him too, but over time it has become very clear that he’s just not a good finisher at all. The way he
1) gave away chases against England in the T20 series in UAE,
2) tried his best to derail Pakistan’s chase in the 1st ODI (thankfully got out and Malik took it from there)
3) wasted so many balls and finally got out against India in the 3rd ODI to end in a losing cause
4) fails to rorate strike even and eventually mounts pressure on others
4) usually sets very defensive field
just doesn’t work for a leader. Just look at his counterpart MS Dhoni who has rescued his team times and again in high pressure situations, and thus he’s a great finisher and one of the best captains around. So this is high time for Misbah to lead the team in tests only and pave the way for someone like Hafeez to take on the ODI captain role.Recommend
If the three of them bat 50 overs, they would collectively put on 100 runs. over simplification qazi sahab.
misbah hating is a fad. people like to do that.Recommend
so we finally get a good, clean, honest captain..and what do we want? to get rid of him. ofcourse. it wouldn’t be pakistan otherwise.Recommend
@HRK
The third ODI innings exactly showed why Misbah is important.Wheb he got out, Pakistan needed 55 runs from 16 overs! So it should habeen no pressure situation but something forced Akmal to dance down the track and run towards pavilion.
Remove his 39 runs from the innings and high chances Pak would have got out under 100.
Due to the fragile batting order, he has been forced to change his game. Now don’t expect him to be a dasher.
And please don’t compare him with Dhoni.Dhoni has been captianing for last 7 years now.Compare him with the options we have. Eveyrone has forgotten number of ducks Hafeez had in continuity few months back.Hafeez is in great form now a days and u dnt want to ruin things by han ding him over the captiancy. He has age on his side and will eventually get a chance.Recommend
@ Al chemisto
here come TUK TUK lover hahahah same argument again & again Get a life man bring sumthing new
Misbah failed as a finisher & disappointed Pakistan on several occasion
WC T20 2007 round match against India no doubt brought a match single handedly to a position of 1 off 2 a batsman playimng on 50+ but cudnt finish the game oK first time take it
WC Final T20 agaian brought single handedly then 5 off 4 got out again same thing player playing on 50 + failed again cudnt finish the match
WC 2007 Semi final cudnt take the single in middle order by just blocking the balls put pressure on Akmal & razzaq Shafiq & finally messed it up in the end lost the match
T20 ENg series 28 off last 4 over Misbah played more than 30 + balls cudnt finish the match messed up again out in the last ball needing 6
In Last match also Misbah played 82 balls & out in a fashion of test cricket in leg slip come on give me a break if he is playing anchor role then y got out in that fashion y cudnt finish the match
Supporter like u gave lame excuses that if Misbah wont stay on the pitch then team will got out inside very less score what is the point of staying till the end & lost bottom line is the same always on the losing side basically he is a choker & not a finisher which is expected usually from player batting at low middle order
Secondly age 39 he cant play WC 2015 by considering his form & fielding Dhoni got to century coz of him in 1st ODI y shud b misbah in ODI team when player like azhar shafiq haris sohail malik umar akmal there rely on them give captaincy to hafeez
Time for new blood now if a player got class like Inzi yousuf then one can bear his age & style but he is just an average player who cudnt got chance due to his lack of skills at the time of Inzi era after his debut in 2001 got the chance b/c no one left in Pakistan cricket after 2009 specially Stop blind trust on him & think calmly u will get my pointRecommend
Qazi
U nailed it Spot on broRecommend
Yes he is an average player. That is why he has an average batting average. and also his average captaincy record.
Just like any other average captain,he has only won 15/22 series he has captained.
Just like any average captain, he has lost only 1 Test match.
You do not remember the scoop Hafeez played during WC semi final? or do u?
He may not be the best of finishers, but so many times he has brought the team home.
Of course u ll also not remember how many time Shahid Afridi has finished a game in past three years.
And his fielding is better than many other players in the team. And age should not be an issue if he is fit.Recommend
And to quote him ” Call me Tuk Tuk,and keep calling me, but remember I am the captain of Pakistan national team”Recommend
It is a misconecption in Pakistan that players of the age of Misbah (39) should not play any sports….Misbah should not be having any plan for retiring in near future…He is leading us well and leadin us to victories…He should not retire before a young batsman is settled in middle order.Recommend
@ Alchemisto
Take it easy bro i know fan of TUK TUK Misbah but if u have little bit of cricketing sense then u wont talk like that Stats can never depict actual or true picture of the story if stats is the only criteria then Holding marshal thompson ambrose Haynes Gower Andy roberts miandad are an average player u cant solely rely on stats
I would like to notify u that we r talking abt ODI here only now come to your stats afetr misbah took over captaincy from Afridi he played 4 series win against minnows( afghanistan, ireland, zimbabwe, bng) 2 series against srilanka lost 3-1 win 4-1 asia cup won aust lost 2-1 eng 4-0 won against india 2-1
Now u can see apart from minnows 4 series what did lost 3 series against slight better teams & win twice surprisingly all series are in sub continent & middle east not a single series abroad now he is going in SA then we will see his capability things which is appreciable about Misbah what he did for test team which will be tested in SA also
I have reminded you about his innings failure & his match loosing please enlighten me times when he won the match for Pak single handedly
This is the biggest tragedy that he is currently ODI captain of our team but after SA he wont m sure age is the other factor a lot of youngster r there who can take his place, he is in the team B/C he is captain otherwise he has no place in the team what he did for last 1 yr or soRecommend
Australian series was hugely effected by due factor. Yes the England series loss was a poor performance. But lets not forget how good KP was in the series. Also Pakistan have historically played badly in Sirilanka. The matches we lost were mostly throw always due to players like Afridi,Also remember Muhammad Samj over in which he gave away 20 runs in last over??? The final score line could has been easily different.
iA Misbah will lead Pakistan team in England!Recommend
@ Al-Chemisto
Misbah is such a pathetic batsman that even after being a middle order batsmen and getting ample of time at the crease, he has yet to make a ODI century after 108 matches. I think this piece of statistics quite efficiently proves that how worthless and a burden he has proved over the years. What do you have to say about that??????Recommend
@Maaz: Those figures are misguiding because if you take a look at Pakistan’s ODI performance in 2012, they won only 7 matches under Misbah and lost 10. Pointing out Afridi’s performance as captain is pointless cos this is purely against Misbah the ODI player, nothing to do with Afridi. But since it was brought up, under Afridi, Pak won 18 ODIs and lost 15.
For those who say who to replace Misbah with – well there are many. Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Umar Amin are all waiting for their chances. Umar Akmal is already in the team so the question of replacing Misbah with him doesnt even arise.
My whole issue with the ODI XI is that Misbah doesnt fit in there. Esp when you have someone like YK and Azhar Ali there, who are similar batsmen.
More importantly, the WC is 2 years away. Misbah and YK will most probably not be around then.. better to phase them out rather than have both leave at the same time.Recommend
I have already explained ODI series results.
The point about not making a century, well u can also see how many times he has been left to bat with tail and leaving him no opportunity.Even a brilliant batsman like Dhoni has only a handful of centuries. So centuries do not represent the actual picture.
YK had not performed for a long time.He was included only as a replacemnt of Asad Shafiq.
And people who blame Misbah for ODI loses, have u thought how much resources he had in fast bowling department?????? Many of the ODI loses were due to this reason.Pakistan played with only 1 fast bowler in last ODI against Aus.Umer Gul has been out of form and un reliable since WC semifinal.
Misbah has captained wonderfully well in every format.
Please learn to respect a person who brought some respect to a team which was labelled as Cheaters and match fixers before him.Recommend
