Can Mother Teresa, a non-Muslim, go to heaven?

The recent killings of Shias and blasphemy charges against a young Christian girl are not a product of some foreign militant group terrorising our peaceful land.

The incidents of violence against minorities and sectarian groups are largely a result of the ideology that exists in all corners of our society. Whether you are a liberal or conservative, educated or ignorant, we all share the blame for such incidents.

On this very topic, a heated argument in my class erupted when I asked a simple question to my students:

“Is Mother Teresa going to heaven?”

To my surprise, more than 80% of this educated elite answered the question with a vehement ‘no’. All of those who answered in the negative explained that while Mother Teresa was a noble woman, she was not a Muslim and, hence, could not enter heaven. This ideology is the first step towards the action of violence and brutality.

Below is a dialogue with one of my students who represented this school of thought:

“So, Mother Teresa is not going to heaven?”

Student: “No, since she was not a Muslim.”

“But she saved thousands of lives.”

Student: “Well, she was to be rewarded for that in this world, but one can’t enter heaven until he/she says the Kalima.”

“So you’re saying only the Muslims are going to heaven, no matter how evil they are?”

Student: “Yes, evil Muslims will be punished for some time, and will be sent to heaven after the punishment.”

“So, when you die, you’re going to go to heaven no matter what you do in this world, just because you we’re born a Muslim?

Student: “Yes, precisely!”

“Did you decide where you were born?”

Student: “No.”

“Who decided that?”

Student: “God.”

“So, God has already decided at your birth that you’re going to heaven; whereas Mother Teresa, having saved thousands of lives, will be going to hell?”

Student: “Err… I think so. God has said it in numerous places in the Holy Quran. Had the ‘message’ reached her and she converted to Islam, she would have been able to enter paradise.”

“Is accepting the message more important, or following the message?”

Student: “Following it, of course.”

“Do you think you follow the message of Islam?”

Student: “Well, I try to, but I don’t think so.”

“Do you think Mother Teresa followed the message of Islam?”

Student: “Umm, well she didn’t offer namaz or read the Holy Quran, but she did follow the message.”

“So, she still can’t go to heaven after having followed the message of Islam?”

Student: “I don’t know. I’ll have to do further research on that.”

“Forget that. Have you read the Holy Quran?”

Student (enthusiastically) : “Yes!”

“With translation or only the Arabic text?”

Student: “Arabic only.”

“How do you claim that something is written in the Holy Quran when you have not really read it?”

Student: “I don’t know. I’ve heard about it.”

“So, Mother Teresa is going to hell because you’ve heard from somebody that it is written in the Holy Quran, who probably heard it from somebody else?”

Student: “Hmm.”

“You’re basically assuming that it is written in the Holy Quran, and assuming that Mother Teresa is not going to heaven.”

Student (frustrated) : “I don’t know.”

“Do you accept that without reading or understanding the Holy Quran, whatever you claim about it is mere assumption?”

Student: “Yes.”

“Good. So, can Mother Teresa possibly go to heaven now that you’re not God, and do not have the absolute knowledge about the day after?”

Student: “I don’t know, may be?”

This dialogue depicts one of the root cause of most of the sectarian and religious problems in Pakistan. Our beliefs and knowledge about the world has been told to us by someone who heard them from somebody else, and so on. In our culture, the idea of self-exploration does not exist and people have taken beliefs and ideas to be for granted.

Moreover, we are so bogged down into petty debates that we have lost track of what really is important for our survival. We need to really get over and beyond the petty debate about who is going to hell or heaven. There is a desperate need to change the narrative and debate in our households, classrooms, and most importantly, our media, so we can start thinking about issues that are urgent and real. As long as our debate doesn’t change, we will continue to discriminate against other sects and religions.

This article is a complete reflection of lack of knowledge about Islam and what rules Allah and Rusool has set for the humanity.
You can continue to write about who goes to heaven or hell, but the ultimate deciding authority is Allah, The Supreme.
Stop caring about Mother Teresa or Hitler going to heaven for saving children or killing jews which is a good thing for muslims. Start caring about if you are going to heaven or not.Recommend

This is one of the major flaw in all of the abrahamic faiths. More then half of the humanity will be roasted in hell for ever for a predetermined life. Sadistic or what ?Recommend

  • BlackJack

The fact is that this is not an issue that is relevant only to Islam, although its adherents are often more willing to kill non-believers if they cannot save their souls. All Abrahamic religions believe that they hold the eternal copyright on God, and infringers are pagans or infidels. This is the main issue that Eastern religions cannot stomach, and this is what brings conversion and its related hatred/ bigotry/ incompatibility with the outside world into the picture. There is no solution as it is written in the holy book; questioning this is to question the basic tenets of Islam, and punishments are pretty hefty (even in this life) as I understand.Recommend

I think this concept has totally spiraled off in a new direction. When it comes to judgment of your deeds on the day of judgment there is a simple concept taught to us by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Allah will ask the person, no matter how righteous in this world, whether his deeds were for the pleasure of Allah alone or not. If they take a deity with Allah (do shirk), Allah will tell them to go and ask those gods to reward him for those deeds as they were not done purely for the pleasure of Allah.

Needless to say that muslims will be punished for their sins and misdeeds as well.

I think the Quran and Ahadeeth leave no doubt in the concepts of judgment and accountability. They also leave no doubt in the rights that Islam gives to minorities, protection of whom is the responsibility of the muslims. If they fail this, they will have to answer in front of Allah on the last day. Islam makes no discrimination between muslims and non-muslims in human rights.

May Allah guide us all to the right path!!!Recommend

“Following the message” is indeed very crucial. But is their any pre-req to it ? We have been given a clear baseline. Every Individual has to answer three questions in grave. “Following a message” is only 3rd question. One needs to pass all the three to be qualified for the heaven. The questions are clearly mentioned in Quran. And answering them correctly to qualify for the heaven is quite logical. Isnt it ? :)

I hope this clarifies… So, before following a message you have to believe in Oneness of God and believe in the person who brought the “message” .. only then comes “following the message” … :)Recommend

It always amazes me that even now, in 2012 so many people believe that there is a God. Teresa from what I have heard and read about her was a good person. She was not good because others told her to be good. She was not good because she though she would go to hell if she wasn’t. She was good because that is what being human is all about.

The ‘correct’ belief in God cannot be acquired by logic or empirical evidence; so nobody should enter hell for not believing the right belief. Everybody thinks his belief is right. We think we are right, Mother Teresa thought she was right. Nobody adopts false belief willfully! How can an abstract phenomenon like belief lead you to hell? According to some Sufi traditions, it is abominable to do good with heaven as the end in mind. Similarly, modern western ethics define goodness viz social utility. A literal interpretation of the Quran leads exactly to the kind of thinking your students have. What you need to teach your students is the progress of the very concept of the philosophy of what is ‘good’ from ancient times to this day. The traditional Islamic narrative on the subject, as derived from the Quran and Hadis, is inconsistent with modern values and must be deleted from our academics.Recommend

Good work Hussain. Your blog reminded me of a poem I had been taught when I was in middle school. Abou Ben Adhem by James Leigh Hunt. The poem is quite simple but the message is very strong.

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
“What writest thou?”—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered “The names of those who love the Lord.”
“And is mine one?” said Abou. “Nay, not so,”
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said “I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men.”

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest.Recommend

The reason that many Muslims believe they’ll go to Jannah no matter what they do is due to lack of understanding of Islam. Islam as opposed to other religions doesn’t guarantee you a place in paradise just because you call yourself “Muslim”, rather one has to follow the command of Allah and the way of the Prophet SAW in each and every aspect of one’s life to deserve Heaven. There are numerous Verses of the Quran on the subject. Other religions and Christianity in particular is based on the childish belief that Jesus PBUH died for their sins and no matter what they will go to heaven. Islam on the other hand tells us that every soul has to bear its own burden on the day of judgement and things like your language, race, clan, tribe or your relatives won’t be able to save you on that day. And yes Mother Teressa won’t be going to Heaven because she didn’t believe in the basic fact that ” there’s no God but Allah and Muhammad SAW is His messenger. “Recommend

okay i am not an expert to speak on this issue but i have something that i would like to share. i don’t remember the exact verse or surah where i read this, i’ll try to look for it, but i once remember reading this verse in the quran in which this issue was addressed. i don’t remember the exact words in the exact order but it was about whether non muslims would go to heaven if they do good all their lives and not believe in Allah and in reply to that it was written that their good deeds are of no use because iss se barra zulm kya hai agar Allah ke saath kisi aur ko shareek thehraya jaye or maybe it was ke Allah per emaan na laya jaye. forgive me if i have misquoted or misinterpreted it but this was one question i always had in my mind. also, while reading the quraan’s translation i have come across many verses saying that even non muslims (christians, jews etc) will go to heaven as long as they believe in the existence and oneness of Allah. my interpretation is that the basic criteria is to believe in Allah as the only god and in the day of judgement but it isn’t necessarily the ONLY requirement. even muslims have to be muslims in the truest sense i.e. actually be good before they can enter heaven. if a person is a believer in Allah but doesnt follow any of his teachings and does bad stuff (starting from the moment they become a believer) then they’re just being a hypocrite or munaafiq about it all and munaafiq’s wont be going anywhere near heaven i think. but then again this is just my interpretation, i may or may not be right about it. • Simplicity is the key

Q: Can Mother Teresa, a non-Muslim, go to heaven?

A: Yes, yes she can. Because Allah’s kindness is for humans, not just for Muslims. And if we Muslims started believing that too, we’d become the best/kindest nation in the world. But no, we have this HAUGHTINESS AND PRIDE, that since we ARE MUSLIMS, no matter what heinous crimes (child abuse, spousal abuse, murder, rape) we WILL ONE DAY go to heaven, while non-Muslims, no matter HOW KIND, HOW GENEROUS and HOW SELFLESS, will burn in Hell.
Then why bother being kind? Or careful? why not drink, gamble and party the night away? After all, you were born a Muslim, so you have your ticket to heaven with you already! Whats a few years in hell? Let the Christians/ jews waste their kindness and good deeds, they’re gonna burn for eternity anyways…? //just so you know, that last para is sarcasm

Another clarification: Christians, Jews, … are both, as the word is put, ‘People of the books’ i.e. they each have a book, and prophets. and as such are just as worthy of the possibility of heaven than any Muslim. I find it laughable when people term them ‘Kafir’ which translates to being a ‘disbeliever’ which is not correct; they still DO believe in their books, and teachings and the concept of one god (even though they might have tainted them themselves) but they are STILL the people of their books! You know this is what the jews believe as well, that they’ll goto heaven because they were the members of the first monotheist religion. This is a common misconception which is pierced into our mids that no matter what we do in this life we will goto heaven because we are muslims. It Disturbs me greatly that no one, not even the educated elite even bothered to look into the translation of the quran, My advice : Pick up an easy english quran which you will understand easily and empower yourself. So More Following the religion i.e Haqooq ul ibad, Tolerance, Charity and less dwelling in the fact that each muslim has a one way first class ticket to heaven regardless of what he does. Recommend

    Dear Author,

It is mentioned in Quran that all sins will be forgiven by Allah but ‘shirk’. If she has done ‘shirk’ then she can save all the worlds but she wont go to heaven period.

Open Quran and find out for yourself. People will not go to heaven just because you think they do what is right, they will go to heaven when they do what they are told to do. Quran is divine, that’s what Muslims believe and we are to follow what is written in it. You can brand people with this mind set in whatever way you please but it will never change. This is part of belief of Muslims and it will stay this way.Recommend

And i never thought there is something like “their God” and “my God” i thought God is same for everyone!! Am i missing something here ??

Or do you guys do not see these universal values of all religions? Just amazed really.

And if this is the mindset in Pakistan, no wonder people of minority sects are oppressed.Recommend

    @elementary:

Allah clearly tells us that we need to struggle hard in order to find the right path. Allah will only guide those who actually struggle to be guided. If Allah has already predetermined who would go to hell and heaven without giving us free will then it would be useless for Allah to tell us to strive to be good. So Allah guides those who strive and put an effort to want to be guided. If you move away from Allah, he will let you. He won’t stop you and he won’t forcibly bring you back. If however you move towards him, he will move even more towards you. That’s what “guides whomever He Wills” means.

There is a brain given to us by Allah so that we can choose between right and wrong. We talk a lot about haqqul-ibad these days, but this thing falls in Huquq-Allah category.Recommend

Let me relate the incidence in Prophet of God, our beloved Mohammad(pbuh), who saw a young boy anxiously preparing himself for prayers and remarked to himself that this young boy is destined for paradise in heavens after his demise.

And prompt came the reply from the Angel Gabriel, O’h No, this young boy is going to grow up and become the worst criminal in his later life and hell shall await his destiny after death, is the Commandment Of God the almighty. This resulted in the sadness appearing on the grim face of Mohammad(pbuh), which the young boy immediately saw and remarked, O’h Prophet of God, why has sadness appeared on your face all of a sudden? And the Prophet was obliged to tell the young boy what he had just heard from the angel.

The boy’s reaction was straight and simple; O’h Prophet of God, I am trying to do what my duty towards the God almighty is and God must do what is God’s own will.

The Angel gabriel instantly told the Prophet of God that God has now commanded to grant the young boy a very long life, involved in all the tasks which Mohammad(pbuh) had preached to the followers and a paradise shall be the reward for his efforts.

The decision of granting a paradise or hell is alone in the hands of God the almighty one and no human. The so called Pakistani muslims have a long way to learn about Islam.

Learn arabic language to be able to understand Quraan.

No religion guarantees entrance into paradise or heaven just because you were born in or converted to that religion.Period. God does not discriminate that way. No religious book (not some crackpot’s interpretation) says that just because being a certain religion follower you will be granted access to heaven, all religion tell us that we should follow GOD’s message of peace, love, unity, compassion, devotion etc, meaning that God want us to be a good human first, he doesn’t envisioned us to be a Muslim or a Hindu or a Jew or a Christian. He want us to be a good human being. That’s how the GOD identify us and that’s how GOD judges us. His only judgement criteria is that how we fared on the scale of humanity. That is his universal scale of measuring whether we are allowed entrance to heaven or not. That guarantees that a good muslim, or for that matter good hindu/jew/christian/sikh/jain/buddhist etc have equal probability of reaching heaven if they have performed equally good deeds in the eyes of God. Only this is his universal law, rest is myth.Recommend

the problem with muslims these days, esp pakistani muslims is that they will believe the age-old lies that jahil molvis have invented in the name of islam, rather than opening the holy book and reading it with translation and trying to understand it. if all of us started reading quran with translations a lot of the ills that plague us will be erased. please refer to the following translations. i believe tht mother taresa is janate; the ultimate decider if His supreme being, but these translations are enough for me to believe that she will be sent to heaven on the day of judgment.

“Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Final Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.” [Quran 2:62]

“Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabians and the Christians whoever believes in Allah and the Final Day and does good– they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.” [Quran 5:69]

“Surely those who believe and those who are Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associate (others with Allah)– surely Allah will decide between them on the day of resurrection; surely Allah is a witness over all things.” [Quran 22:17]

I thought God controls everything. When times comes for one to go no one can do anything.

Thanks for enlightening me, and if that’s the case no wonder every religion has not only found place in India but thrived. Because we Hindus are never that ‘strict’ or ‘rigid’ about “right God” or “right path” , I think I can find Ram, Allah or Christ anywhere. Recommend

Let us see what Allah Almighty has to say about this. Allah says:
“Verily! Those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve”
    (Holy Qur’an, 2: 62)

Ibn Kathir, with reference to Ibn Abi Hatim, narrates in his tafsir of the verse above:
‘Salman Farisi (R.A.) said, ‘This verse was revealed when I made a mention of the of the prayers and fasting of those believers whom I had met before coming to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W)’.
Which means the believers BEFORE The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) got the first revelation.

    However, Allah also says:
“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he (or she) will be one of the losers.”
    (Holy Qur’an, 3: 85)

So if Mother Teresa was at the time before the advent of Islam, she would have definitely gone to heaven. However as she lived in our contemporary times the matter rests in the decision of Allah Almighty. Who are we to judge? Perhaps she realized and repented at the end? Only Allah knows. So let us not pass our judgement when we already have Qur’an and Sunnah for our guidance. Recommend
