Pakistan’s victory at the Oval was the best Independence Day present we could get!

Yesterday’s Test match was a befitting conclusion to one of the most engrossing Test series played in recent times. A 2-2 draw in the Pakistan-England series seemed like an appropriate result for both teams who played their level best. It was also an incredible Independence Day present from our team to Pakistani cricket fans; it couldn’t have been timed better. Well done, Misbahul Haq!

Lord’s Cricket Ground is the home of cricket and it’s every cricketer’s wish to be able to play and perform exceptionally at this historic venue. The incentive to perform well at Lord’s is having your name written on the honour board, which is erected inside the pavilion of the cricket ground. How can a cricketer have his name included in that list? Simple, a batsman has to score a century and a bowler has to take five wickets in an inning or 10 wickets in a match. There is a long list of players on this board, but unfortunately, the world’s greatest players such as Sachin ...

The year 1987 is knows as the golden year in the history of Pakistan cricket because of the many memorable victories it bagged back then. Will Pakistan be able raise the T20 World Cup?

Cricket has come a long way since 2003, when the T20 cricket concept was first introduced. In 2007, the ICC T20 World Cup was first introduced along with 16 teams – from across the world – participating to win a prestigious trophy. Unlike Test matches, which can last up to five days, T20 matches are typically completed within six hours. The fast pace of the game, shared with the short duration, results in an extremely active crowd. When the date for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2016 was announced, March 15, 2016, cricket fans worldwide began to prepare themselves to support their favourite teams. [caption ...

Do you know what ingredients are used in locally made fairness creams?

On numerous occasions in the past, heavy fines have been imposed on Johnson & Johnson and other prominent pharmaceutical companies for various offences such as false labelling, poor manufacturing practices, Medicare fraud, and kickbacks. This was possible because consumer protection laws are strongly implemented around the world. Unfortunately, here, in Pakistan, we have no such laws; everyone is manufacturing and selling products without the risk of facing any trouble. It’s in our society that edible items and medical products are manufactured without any respect for the consumers’ health. Let’s look at how these businesses exploit people. Our society denies proper education or vocational training to girls, particularly those ...

Can Pakistan’s ugly media rivalry stay out of the PSL, please!

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is underway. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s initiative to make this league a reality is truly commendable. Young players don’t usually get the chance to showcase their talent in front of the global community as a result of poor local coverage. Hence, PSL will be the ideal opportunity for various budding cricketers to not only display their prowess, but to learn from the experienced coaching staff and prominent foreign players. PSL is a franchise-based tournament which forms provincial teams and these teams battle against each other over a month’s time. With various companies buying franchises, the highest bid was received by ARY for ...

Dear PCB, can you please prevent your players from ruining their careers?

Self-medication is the use of medicines to treat self-diagnosed symptoms. Not only is this practice problematic, it is highly unsafe. Potential risks include incorrect self-diagnosis, delay in seeking medical advice when needed, infrequent but severe adverse reactions, dangerous drug interactions, an incorrect manner of administration, incorrect dosage, improper choice of therapy, masking of a severe disease and the risk of dependency and abuse.  It’s sad that Yasir Shah, Pakistan’s beloved leg spinner, did not pay heed to these problems. He took a medicine for his back injury which contained Chlortalidone, a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA). Since ...

Is it game over for Imran Khan and PTI?

Remember when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as a popular party in the country ahead of the 2013 general elections? Everybody was swept away by Imran Khan’s tsunami rhetoric and we all thought we had found Pakistan’s saviour. It received an overwhelming response from its supporters in various consistencies, which made it the second largest party after Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The urban middle-class was thrilled. They all swayed to the chants of ‘real change’ and ‘naya Pakistan’. They were spellbound and euphoric. They thought they were part of a historic movement that would end corruption, nepotism and injustice in Pakistan. The idea that ...

Why don’t men give women the rights guaranteed to them by religion?

Pakistani women are playing an active role in society and have attained success in fields that were considered to be ‘no go zones’ a few years ago. Although they are taking strides towards prosperity and financial independence, further efforts need to be made in order for them to gain their share of honour and dignity. Could you have imagined, a decade ago, that Pakistan would have scores of female fighter pilots in its Air Force? Could you have imagined a year that Pakistan’s soil would be emboldened with the memory of a female martyr, Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar? Many of you are nodding your ...

I took a roadtrip from Karachi to Muzaffarabad and discovered real Pakistan

Pakistan is a land of plains, plateaus, mountains and a rich cultural heritage. It also has an abundance of fruits and vegetables; an abundance which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. If marketed appropriately, Pakistan’s treasures can attract a multitude of tourists. This summer, I had the opportunity of taking a road trip from Karachi to Islamabad and then Muzaffarabad, allowing me to be stunned by Pakistan’s beauty first hand. Guava Cart at Phool Nagar, near Multan. Road trips are fun but can be extremely exhausting and require a lot of planning. Drivers must be well rested, your car should be ...
